HEMSWORTH...AN HISTORICAL STORY

a history of hemsworth

The first documented history of Hemsworth was in the Doomsday book, although it is believed there was a settlement here long before that.

The geographical location of Hemsworth made it a good place in which to settle. It was sheltered from the North and had an ample supply of spring water and building materials in the form of clay, sandstone and wood.

hemsworth, west yorkshire

Hemsworth escaped most of the ravages of the two World Wars.

Mining was classed as a ‘reserved’ occupation so miners were not called up in the forces.  Now it is a place re-adjusting itself in the aftermath of the demise of the pits and suffers common issues such as unemployment and the legacy of mining subsidence.

Hemsworth was classed as a relatively safe area and as such, had many evacuee children sent here by train to be taken in by the good people of Hemsworth until it was safe for them to return to London.

By the 1960’s Scottish miners and their families were encouraged to Hemsworth to work in the pits. A new housing estate (the Scotch Estate) was built to accommodate them. At first there was a lot of resentment by the locals against the Scottish, but the last miners strike united the whole community in fighting pit closures - a battle that was lost!

Several agencies are working valiantly to regenerate the area with money and training opportunities.  This is having a measure of success and can only benefit the long term prospects of the town.
